Useful information

Selecting the best spot for your Goody Foody Garden

Select the spot with the most sun, away from overhanging branches, and on as flat a surface as possible.

Children will likely play in the garden, so use common sense and avoid goals, swings etc and busy footfall areas.

The vegetable raised beds are lined allowing them to be placed on any surface including stones, slabs, driveways and lawn. Bear in mind lawn will be affected by having the vegetable raised bed  placed on it, so check the family are ok with this. Do not place it on decking as it will eventually rot the wood.

The veggie beds can be placed anywhere around the property so the best spot could be in the front garden or to the side of this house; what is important is to get the maximum amount of sunshine.

A Goody Foody Garden measures 1.8m x 0.9m x 0.3m, so you will need at least 2.5m x 1.5 to move around the perimeter of the veggie bed on at least two sides.

Estimated Yields

The Goody Foody Garden is sectioned into 12 squares when installed. One square is for the herbs (we call it the herb corner) and the remaining 11 for vegetables.

You can choose up to 2 herbs and 11 vegetables. You do not have to pick all different varieties; you could choose 2 or more of a particular favourite  if you really love it!

Choosing a different vegetable per square will result in a small yield of lots of different veg. For a bigger yield of a favourite, simply increase the number of squares for that variety. The combination of items is up to you. So long as the final total does not exceed 11 veg and 2 herbs, you can choose whatever you want.

Here are estimated yields for our 2022 range. Bear in mind plants are natural and therefore not 100% predictable.

  • Herbs - max 2 plants per square
  • Lettuce and Chard - 3 plants per square. We use 'cut and come again' varieties which keep growing back when picked. Use young chard leaves in salads or chop into stir frys. Refresh with new plugs in late season.
  • Rocket - Approx. 4 plants per square. Ready to harvest from days 25-45. Trim leaves for fresh regrowth. Will bolt in summer. Re-sow fresh seeds in late season
  • Spinach - 4 plants per square. Ready to harvest from days 25-45. Trim leaves for fresh regrowth. Will bolt in summer. Harvest and re-sow seeds in late season
  • Beetroot - 6-8 bulbs per square. Ready to harvest in 8-10 weeks. Leaves can be used as spinach replacement. Space will be empty late season, so fill with something new
  • Radish - 8-10 bulbs per square. Super-fast grower, great for kids. Ready to harvest in 4-6 weeks. Thin out shoots , then harvest by summer. Re-sow seeds late season.
  • Kale - 1 to 2 plants per square. This is the Queen of the veg bed! Pick largest leaves from 30-40 days and fresh leaves will grow from centre. Keeps going until Jan-Feb 2023
  • Peas - 3 plants per square. Try starting seeds on windowsill. Plants will need support with canes (provided). Sow where peas have not been grown last 2 years. Space will be empty late season to use for something else
  • Purple Topped Turnip - 8-10 per square. Thin when small to leave 10cm between roots. Leaves can be eaten as greens. Harvest when no more than 5-6cm wide. Ready from 8 weeks. Re-sow fresh seeds in late season.
  • Leeks - 6 per square. Plant early and harvest in winter. Slow growers.
  • Celery  2 - 3 per square. Plant spring harvest July/ August. Can reuse the space for something new late season
  • Carrots - 15-20 per square. Kids love them but can be tricky. Harvest from 12-16 weeks. Needs lots of sun. Thin early. Reuse the empty space late season
  • Spring onions - 16-20 per square. Ready in 8 weeks. Will keep in soil or replant late season.
  • White onions - 6-8 per square. Plant in Oct/ Nov ready following June/ July.
  • Garlic 6-8 per square. Plant in Oct/ Nov ready following June/ July.
  • French Beans - 3 plants per square. Try starting seeds on windowsill. Plants will need support with canes. Sow where peas or beans have not been grown last 2 years. Space will be empty late season to use for something else.
